The Latino Journal, in collaboration with the K-12, higher education officials and other stakeholders embarked on a mission to increase funding for education in California in 2005. Given the cooperation to increase education funding by the State of California in 2006, the Latino Journal decided to focus on adressing the school drop out crisis, a crisis that affects California's Hispanic and African American communities the most. In some school districts the Hispanic drop out rate exceeds 60% according to a study released in 2005 by The Civil Rights Project, Harvard University: "Drop Outs in California: Confronting the Graduating Rate Crisis".
The California Education Workshops and a California Education Summit 2007 are planned for the purpose of creating synergy between business, education, and community leaders to effectively address the school drop out crisis. The initiative theme is Addressing The School Drop Out Crises in California. We plan workshops in San Jose, San Diego, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Fresno and a summit in Sacramento in November. Our goal is to significantly reduce the drop out rate in California's public schools.
Strategic alliances have been established between the Latino Journal and the U.S. Department of Education, Office of the Secretary of Education; California Department of Education, California Community Colleges, California State University System and the University of California. Other important stakeholders involved include: California Chamber of Commerce; California School Board Association; California State Teachers Association; California Charter Schools Association; Parent Institute for Quality Education; California Association of Bilingual Educators, California State Lottery; and several others.
